ABOUT US

The Society for the Documentation of Submerged Sites – SDSS – is an international non-profit organization founded in Italy in 1999.

The organization's mission is to study, research, enhance, and protect the underwater historical, cultural, biological, and environmental heritage, and to foster, through its activities, the general public's interest in history, archaeology, and environmental protection, including through volunteer and citizen science initiatives.

The SDSS's main activity is the documentation of submerged sites of historical, archaeological, and biological value, as well as critical environmental situations, using various systems and methodologies and in collaboration with researchers and organizations responsible for research and conservation.

SDSS promotes high standards of diving safety and a philosophy of responsible approach, conservation and protection of aquatic environments.

SDSS volunteer teams include dozens of highly trained technical divers, documentary filmmakers, and explorers from many countries around the world, capable of operating efficiently and safely at depths beyond the limits typically considered for scientific diving—between 50 and 150 meters below the sea surface. SDSS's documentation capabilities offer the scientific community, research, and conservation organizations the unique opportunity to conduct detailed surveys, observations, and other scientific work in this virtually unexplored area of the ocean floor.

SDSS is involved in numerous underwater archaeology, wreck documentation, and environmental preservation projects in collaboration with leading research institutions.
